Ajman University Student Secures Second Place at  “What is Thalassemia?” Competition

Kawther AbdulHameed Al Shehhi, a student at the College of Pharmacy and Health Science at Ajman University of Science & Technology proudly brought home the second prize at a national competition. It was a campaign entitled “What is Thalassemia?” wherein the competition was divided into categories and our student represented her research in the third category of students and institutions.

She received her award for organizing a successful social media campaign to raise awareness about Thalassemia. She ran the campaign utilizing the social networking site as of Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

Under the auspicious patronage of the wife of HH Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Advisor to His Highness the Head of State, Sheikha Sheikha bint Saif Al Nahyan, Chairperson of Emirates Thalassemia Society (ETS), an official awarding ceremony at which Sheikha Shama bint Sultan bin Khalifa honored winners of the competition.

Kawther explained that she has an enriching experience by being part of this campaign, it was a message conveyed to thousands through very little effort but the impact was waves of interaction and awareness. The annual competition, "What is Thalassemia?" is a nation-wide campaign to raise health awareness about Thalassemia among the youth, the teaching faculty and the families. It was initiated in 2007 and has been a resounding success every year.
