AUST Pharmacy College Organizes Asthma Conference

The College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at Ajman University of Science and Technology organized a conference themed "Promoting awareness, screening, prevention and control of asthma in the UAE". The conference is approved by the MOH because of its unique programs and activities, which include lectures about researches to be conducted for the first time in the UAE.

The conference was officially initiated by a speech from Mr. Osama Saeed Salman, Vice-President of AUST, who welcomed the guests and speakers and reiterated the commitment of Ajman University to serve the community. “We at AUST believe in the effectiveness of such events, as they present cutting-edge practices in asthma control, and lead the way towards better patient and disease management. AUST has an ethical and moral responsibility towards the community in educating and raising awareness for such ailments”, he said.

Prof. Abdul Azim Ahmed, Dean, College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences then took to the stage and addressed the attendants, remarking “we are pleased to host this event in the presence of physicians, pharmacists and healthcare professionals from national and regional institutions and hospitals to celebrate the World Asthma Day at AUST”.

The full-day conference held across the entire day included presentations, lectures and workshops along with a sidelines exhibition. The exhibitors were representatives from renowned pharmaceutical industries based in the UAE and the MENA region.

The most important statistics highlighted in the conference are below show that in the UAE, the cost of treating people with asthma is more than 400 million dirhams a year, and that 2% to 13% of the UAE population are asthmatic.

The conference discussed the most advanced methods for the treatment of asthma and allergic disorders, and ways to raise the public’s awareness on the importance of prevention, as well as the latest recommendations in asthma control.

The recommendations provided vital information and advice on

  • Asthma.
  • Asthma episodes.
  • Severe cases of asthma.
  • Asthma in children.
  • Asthma in adolescence.
  • Action Plan for asthma.

Amongst the recommendation were also to take into account the serious impact of passive smoking as it is a key factor for the occurrence of asthma. The methods of providing training seminars and workshops for workers in the health care field. Whilst strengthening the cooperation between physicians, researchers and practitioners in the field of health care to improve the control of asthma in the United Arab Emirates.
