College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences at Ajman University of Science & Technology was represented at the EUROPEAN RESPIRATORY SOCIETY ANNUAL CONGRESS held in Munich, Germany. Dr.  Mohammed Shamssain, Associate Professor, College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, AUST, is engaged in research on Asthma Pathophysiology, Epidemiology and Management in the UAE with the objective of promoting Asthma Management and Control. His research team includes Dr. Aya Rahman Lafta, M.Sc Clinical Pharmacy, Dr. Saeed Abdulla, M.Sc Clinical Pharmacy he is conducting his research  in collaboration with Dr. Bassam Mahboub, Chest Physician, Head of Chest Clinic, Rashid Hospital, Dubai Health Authority.  

Dr. Mohammed and his team are investigating  the prevalence and severity of asthma, allergic Rhinitis and Eczema in UAE schoolchildren and they have established a database of more than 8,000 school children from Ajman, Dubai, Sharjah, Fujairah and Kalba. They are also investigating factors affecting asthma and allergies including breastfeeding, overweight, obesity and environmental pollution. This is a major intervention study in the UAE which will help to reduce childhood asthma and hopefully will improve asthma management and control. The team presented three research articles at a major international Conference “The European Respiratory Society Annual Congress”. The presentations were welcomed by international researchers who attended the congress and recognized Dr Mohammed Shamssains’ research as an important step in reducing childhood asthma in the UAE and improving asthma management and control. The three presentations were as follows:

  1. Effects of long-term breastfeeding and parental asthma condition on the prevalence of asthma, rhinitis and eczema in schoolchildren in the UAE
  2. Effects of air pollution on the respiratory symptoms in schoolchildren in the UAE
  3. Effects of breastfeeding and overweight on the prevalence of asthma in schoolchildren in the UAE.

Ajman University of Science and technology keenly promotes and encourages research in the field of science. These researches lend an important stepping stone in  serving the community with better medical facilities and aid in eliminating the factors that lead to such common ailments being rampant.
