AUST Ajman Blue Sky to mark the World Diabetes Day

To mark this day, the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at Ajman University of Science & Technology organized an eventful day. Abdulla Saeed Salman, Director of the Student Affairs Department, Dr. Abdul Azeem, Dean of the College of Pharmacy along with Department Heads initiated the day’s activities by walking for this cause. The entourage, mostly dressed in blue, walked with enthusiasm towards the conference hall where the opening ceremony of a special exhibition took place.

Abdullah Saeed Salman stressed out the importance of this awareness drive for it will breed a consciousness amongst the young generation. As they approached the exhibition, hundreds of blue balloons were released in the air. This activity was aptly titled “Ajman Blue Sky”. The exhibition was an awareness campaign to fight this disease which affects 18.9 percent of the UAE population, putting it in the 11th place worldwide in terms of diabetes prevalence according to the Diabetes Atlas of 2012 released last year by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF).

Attendees were briefed about the various preventive methods and lifestyle changes to be followed by diabetic people. Free glucose and blood sugar tests were conducted on numerous participants who were advised on the appropriate actions to take according to their results.

Ajman University of Science & Technology supports such initiatives to encourage students to adopt a healthy and conscious lifestyle. This disease is becoming very common and prevalent in our society thus such events and awareness campaigns can help spread the right message.
